Butterchoco Blunder Cake
Just to let you all in on my latest foray... cake baking. I was suddenly ambitious enough today to try baking a simple Buttercake. Or so I thought was simple enough for me not to foil it.
Here is how it first looked like.
Here is how it first looked like.
Here's when reality hits....
Reality really is a BIATCH!!!...
My desperate attempt on a cover up.... to destroy all evidence of my incompetency even as an amateur baker.
End product...
I guess I just had to live up to the fact that - I REALLY CAN'T COOK. And I just screwed up this simple recipe "big time".
I was actually quite happy with the batter I made cos it really looks very fluffy and creamy. There are quite a number of blunders made during the batter mixing time tho. Like I freaking forgotten to sift the salt together with the flour as per the recipe and ended up just chucking that 1/2 tsp salt into the batter last minute.
Then the second blunder was one I could not undo - I forgot to grease the cake pan as I am supposed to before putting the batter into the pan. Well, at least the cake didn't get stuck in the pan when I extract it later. Although I do suspect that all that ugly cracks was due to me failing to religiously follow this last part of the 'simple' instruction.
I have yet to truly taste it as I left it now on the chair to cool off before cutting it as I am typing this post.

kleio,
Let me (the-used-to-be-"baker") give you some advice, okie?
First when I look at your very first photo, it seems to me like it's a toaster rather than an oven? If that's really the case, then, you'll have to be careful with the temperature. The toaster temperature would be higher than the oven, hence, you need to lower the temperature and not following the recipe. You can also try to loosely cover the top of the batter with a piece of aluminium foil.
As for the bottom part, I think I know the problem too. I did notice that the "heater" from the toaster is at the bottom. So, the bottom of the cake did heat up quite fast due to the heater from the bottom. If there's a "function" in your toaster which allows only top part to be heater, that should do the trick.
Anyway, it's a great attempt! After removing the burnt one, it looks good to me! Maybe you can send a piece over to me for my teabreak.
Try again next time. Don't give up, Kleio!:)
Eh.. it tastes great! :D It's not a failure afterall - you just need to improve on some ingredients and watch the temperature! :D
Hi miss you. I'm not a great baker myself. I asked my sis and she said the crack is due temperature too high. I guess you should lower it... like what Kok commented.
Hey, finally see a new post here! HORAY!
I am a dummy when comes to baking, so there, at least you're better than me! LOL
Kok:
Yes sifu *kowtou* please bestow your knowledge on me.
But I must insist, it is an Electric Oven. Not a toaster. I think your suggestion on using aluminum foil might just work. Thanks for the tip. Will let you know if I succeed in my next endeavor.
Overall, it's still edible. My boy claims it's tasty. My hubby says taste wise is good but the texture sucks. Mom and sis laughed and said how did I managed to make such salty cake.
Gina:
Thanks dear for the much needed encouragement. I guess you too like salty cake. Lol.
The temperature is what I really needed to master. And and now I learned that I am NOT supposed to beat the flour in but to gently fold it in. Tat's what my mom told me. Hahahaha. No wonder it looks kinda foamy and threatens to overflow when I bake it. LOL
Che-Cheh:
Sorry for my absence. I am still not sure if I shud continue tho.
Thanks for the tip from your sis. Shall keep an eye on the temperature from now on. I think I am going to try that aluminum foil trick that Kok recommended.
Miss ya too ;)
CC:
Hi there. Thanks for dropping by. Nice to see you here really.
It's my first try at cake baking anyway. Besides, I am really not a good cook. Neither am I highly interested in cooking. I am just trying it out for my hubby and son's sake.
Nope. I am 100% not womanly OR wifely at all.
U shouldda just gone to buy one or just covered it with cake 'make-up' - icing/cream/chocolate. Humans wear make-up so why not cakes? Make it look gorgeous. Heh...
This is a tip for your future baking escapades. :)
it is ok. we r supposed to learn as we go along. they say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach...u work hard at it n soon yr man will b yr slave hahahahaahah
Kleio to Pinkpurplelizard:
Ahahaha good one. But then again I had to try at least once - due to family members err... encouragement. Especially wanted to impress my son.
Next round perhaps I should consider standing by with some cake icings. Just in case. Lol.
Kleio to Bengbeng:
I not sure about who's the slave in my or who's the boss in my household. Tho nowadays I try harder not to be the 'main' slave.
Thanks for the kind encouragement and nice to see you again. I shall be trying my second attempt anytime soon.
Wow, looks like specimen from moon.
haha
btw, I had tagged you~
